Fake Tax Debt Scam – Alert
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers that a new scam method is being used to coerce victims into paying fake tax debt.
There are increasing reports of scammers impersonating tax agents via a three-way telephone conversation to recover ‘tax debt’.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind our clients that if you receive one of these calls to hang up immediately. Do not discuss your tax debt with a third party and do not disclose any personal information or details about your tax agent.
Please note the ATO will never demand immediate payments, threaten you with arrest or request payment by unusual means such as iTunes vouchers, store gift cards or Bitcoin cryptocurrency.
If you are unsure if a telephone call, email or other forms of correspondence is legitimate please contact our office and we can confirm the status of your tax matters.
Our newsletter and media release archive is always accessible from this page. We provide information on current accounting and taxation developments.
